Periodontitis, also known as gum disease is a disease that affects and causes damage to your soft tissue. When no treatment takes place, it could cause serious damage to the bone that supports your tooth. Here at Dr. Iskander Family Dental this is a disease that we monitor, however do not treat in our office. We strive to work with you on your overall oral health, gums included! If we feel that you require specific attention to your gums, we will refer you to a local periodontist.

For those instances that we are able to continue to monitor in-house, there is a periodontist, Dr. Elly Tehrani, that comes into our office to provide the following services:

• Soft Tissue/Gum Grafting
• Frenectomies
• Bone Grafting

Periodontal Services provided:

Gum Grafting:

• Gum recession exposes the roots of your teeth, when this occurs, your dentist may recommend a gum tissue graft.
• A graft is suggested to decrease the chances of tooth decay, abrasion and sensitivity.fjdsk

Frenectomies:

• The frenum is a muscular attachment between two tissues found inside the cheeks and lips, and inside the mouth and gums.
• Certain people require a frenectomy, which is a simple surgical procedure that eliminates the frenum in the mouth.
• Once you receive a frenectomy, you will find that it reduces discomfort, enhances bite function, promotes self-confidence and aids in overall oral health.

Bone grafting:

• A bone graft helps provide needed structure and support in facial features. A bone graft is usually necessary after a tooth extraction, as the bone can start to melt away and cause your facial features to sag and jaw bone to shrink.
• A bone graft may also be necessary if you have a missing tooth, prior to the implant being placed.

Dental implants:

• Dental implants are a great alternative for natural teeth replacement.
• Strong and stable, they can restore a lost tooth and can look, feel, fit and function like a natural tooth. This dental reconstruction procedure has become quite popular, with over a half a million implants placed every year in Canada.

Experience, Expertise and Commitment

Dr. Elly Tehrani is a registered as a specialist in periodontics in Canada and is a board certified periodontist in the United States of America. She graduated with Honours in Science from the University of Toronto. She then went on to pursue her formal training in dentistry at Case School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, where she received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine (DMD). Along with being dual board certified in both the USA and Canada, Dr. Tehrani further pursued her studies at Case Western School of Dental Medicine to complete her Master’s Degree of Science in Dentistry (MSD), as well as her specialty certification in periodontics.
